Geboren 1969, ist Medientheoretikerin und Filmemacherin. Sie promovierte 1998 in den Fächern Romanistik und Linguistik an der Universität Wien. Seit zehn Jahren lehrt und forscht sie in den Vereinigten Staaten und ist seit 2008 Associate Research Professor an der Johns Hopkins University, wo sie Film und Medientheorie unterrichtet.

Zu ihren rezenten Veröffentlichungen zählen 2006 das Buch Getting Under the Skin: Body and Media Theory mit MIT Press, 2007 ihr erster Dokumentarfilm „Made Over“ in America distribuiert von Icarusfilms, und die von ihr 2008 herausgegebene Anthologie „Reality Made Over: the Culture of Reality Makeover Shows“ als Spezialausgaben der Zeitschrift Configurations (15.1. und 15.2).

2010 wird ihr Buch The Cosmetic Gaze: Body Modification and the Construction of Beauty ebenfalls mit MIT Press erscheinen. Derzeit arbeitet sie an zwei dokumentarischen Filmportraits über den in Baltimore ansässigen Wiener Holocaust-Überlebenden Leo Bretholz und den italienischen Philosophen Gianni Vattimo. Bernadette Wegenstein lebt in Baltimore, MD gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann William Egginton und ihren drei Kindern.
